Scrub Fire

Last weekend there was a scrub fire near the beach between Otaki & Waikawa. The DomPost reported that the fire was 50 metres wide, and 1.5 km long. It ran along a natural gully just back from the beach. Not far from houses...

The smoke & flames were visible for miles & miles.

On our way back, we saw the first of two helicopters arrive with monsoon buckets. These photos were taken at dusk & I think they'd have been busy through much of the night.

Grow your own potatoes

Homegrown spudsAfter reading & contributing to a thread on the Public Health Bill over at Kiwiblog I thought I'd let you in on the secret of growing your own potatoes - almosty anywhere, you don't need a garden. Seeing as someone there said the country's seed potato supply went up in smoke the other day.

Kiwiblog » Blog Archive » The Public Health Bill

Get a bucket, any old bucket.

Drill 3 or 4 holes in the bottom.

Put a couple of inches of compost into the bucket.

Followed by 3 or 4 potatoes. They don't have to be seed potatoes - I do this regularly with jersey bennys bought from the supermarket.

Cover with compost, but not to the top of the bucket - just enough to cover the potatoes.

Sit in the sun somewhere & water every couple of days.

The potatoes will send up shoots & leaves. Every few days, add more compost around the shoots, until the bucket is full, by then it will be quite a lush looking plant.

Keep watering every few days.

When the leaves start to go brown, empty the bucket & you will find it full of fresh potatoes.

Plant one of these buckets every three weeks or so & you'll have home grown spuds all year round.

Cardiff City for the FA cup

In 1972 I would sometimes tag along with my uncle to Cardiff to see their football team play. And usually lose.

Cardiff City were near the bottom of the 2nd division in those days, Leeds United were the Manchester United of the day.

So I thought I'd misheard the radio when they reported Cardiff City are in this year's FA Cup Final. Amazing! I wonder if my uncle will go.

For Sue

My sister Sue had a presence that belied her tiny size. And in the short time we’ve had with her, she’s given more than most people would in a 100 years.

She had an incandescent energy that nothing could suppress and she lived every moment to the full .

She had an inexhaustible capacity for love. Her generosity touched the lives of so many people from one end of the earth to the other.

Her heart was in her family. Her best friend and loving husband Murray; her two wonderful boys Rorie & Owain; the wider French & Llewellyn families; the Mitchem clan that she lived with for a few years in Wales; and the Prices in Avalon; her friends were her family and her family were her friends.

My little sister Sue was, at different times, my confidante, my counsellor, my advisor, my comforter, my friend and on occasion, my conscience - if that’s what she thought I needed. I was clearly her older brother, so she was always diplomatic and respectful, but she had no qualms about calling to suggest I consider a certain course of action. Just consider it, mind you.

I was proud of my little sister:

She was about family.

She was an organiser.

She was fiercely Welsh. A leek carrying, red dragon wearing, Max Boyce quoting, Welsh patriot. Sue gave me a Welsh flag one year for Christmas and berated me for not visiting a coalmine the last time I was in Wales.

She had a ready & infectious laugh.

She was a loving mother, enormously proud of her beloved boys. She told me about a recent assembly where Rorie & Owain both spoke. She was just bursting with pride.

She was a loving wife. And a loved wife.

She loved her mum and they enjoyed a close bond.

She was a Sci-fi geek. Sue & I regularly discussed the merits of various cult films, books & TV series over the years. Just recently, we caught Jason & the Argonauts on TV, and we both hooted with laughter.

She was not one to shy from challenges.

And she was just the bravest little sister in the world.

I’m going to miss her love, counsel, advice, respect, comfort and regular “To do” lists

Sue filled our lives with laughter, love & order. She’s left a huge hole in our hearts, but her passing has brought us all closer together.

To all of you – families and friends – we were so lucky to have had Sue in our lives. We’ll hold her in our hearts forever.

The very best exchange of the evening... #2

What is it about weddings that bring out the best (or worst) in people? We attended a fantastic wedding a few years ago in Whitianga, where I heard the funniest thing by means of an introduction to someone...

SunnyO: The very best exchange of the evening...

But this Easter weekend we attended a very different wedding celebration. It was outdoors in a lovely garden (around 5 hectares as best I can figure) that's been groomed for a special day.

I won't go into details because google will betray me, but it was what we happily referred to as a "bogun wedding". That was a reference to many of the guests, friends of the groom. And the fact that there were two baths filled with ice & beer & possibly 6 bottles of wine in all. I drank beer.

But onto the best exchange of the afternoon - Mrs Llew & I were chatting to a woman we know, who was there on her own & who was also bemoaning that she'd overdressed for the occasion - she was wearing a very nice cocktail dress & was standing next to a woman in her very best jeans & boots, just across from a guy in his very best denim shorts (I'm sure the others he had were far more ripped) and gumboots.

But that's by the by - we were standing there taking in the very pleasant ambience, when the groom approached with a man who resembled Brisco County Jr.

Groom: Tash, this is my mate Dave. He's single.

Tash went silent, but Mrs Llew reports she took her arm & dug her fingernails into it. Dave stood behind the groom grinning like a congenial moron. I really wanted to 1. Burst out laughing and 2. Suggest maybe they'd like some time alone together.

Tash: (Embarrassed) Hi Dave.

Groom: Well y'know, I just thought people could get happy, have a few drinks, have a good time... actually Tash, you probably wouldn't get on with Dave, he's an alcoholic.

Mrs Llew: My goodness, this gets better the more we get to know Dave.

Groom: No. It's true, all my mates are alcoholics.

Me: I think it's catching, I'm going to find another beer.

Tash tagged along looking for wine & avoiding Dave. She slipped away not too long after. Without Dave, we checked :)

Already I have learned that Scott Watson is innocent (it's that ketch - it DOES exist apparently, it's just that no-one looked for it. Except the people wqho did look for it & couldn't find it. But anyway...), that evolution is a crazy notion, and that some people are idiots, and have bred more idiots. Although the 2nd comment is just priceless.

Stupid is.... etc

I'm not an experienced Trademe user... I've sold a wardrobe & a dog kennel & that's that. However, chance saw me spot something yesterday - old fashioned hand water pumps for sale - and I bid on a couple of those, hoping to score one of them anyway. And thus inspired I set off to replace the old trampoline that rusted away a few years ago.

And stupidly, I didn't reead the entry closely enough & it seems I have bid $50 on a round trampoline safety net. Not the trampoline itself.

Should I win, I guess I'll be in the market for a 10 foot diametre, round trampoline...

SunnyO: Test the Nation

'That could turn a gay man straight!'

Did you catch the first episode of this year's Hayley Holt Show? I did. And appropriately enough, I have nothing intelligent to say about it.

But giving Hayley a good run in the hot blonde dancer stakes is Nerida Jantti (I don't get this - she used to be Nerida Lister, then shacked up & bred with Shane Cortese... so now somehow she's Nerida Jantti?). Have you noticed her pointy ears? She's got this whole elf thing (if elves dressed like strippers) going on. I like it.

As for the Slebs themselves... here's where google becomes my enemy... how come Geeling Ng looks so old?

And as Jane Bowron pointed out in a piece I can't find online, now the dancers are more famous than the Slebs.

Anyway... no politicians this year. Pity. And somehow they made Miriama Smith look like a front row forward wearing a cocktail dress. How do they do that?

Ironically named "Lifestyle Village" proposed near SunnyO

SunnyO is in a zone designated "Rural". However, it is quite near to residential land & State Highway 1.

A local developer has applied for consent to take 3.6 hectares of Otaki Maori Racing Club land & turn it into 56 "lifetyle" units (plus one manager's residence), to be sold to people over 50 years old (i'm not quite sure about the reasoning for this).

3.6 Ha & 57 units? Do the math. Nice "lifestyle".

The developer, Mr R Ker, and his surveyor, Mark Edgar of Cuttriss Consultants insist that the land is residential (smoke & mirrors - it is zoned Rural & in any case, their proposal flouts residential rules!) & they believe they should be able to inflict 57 ticky tacky units on a shoebox of land, in a rural cul de sac which currently serves olive plantations, a racecourse, a stud farm & SunnyO.

Radio New Zealand National - Checkpoint

Mr Ker can be heard in the clip above insisting that local residents (such as me) are over reacting or some such, given (repeat the lie often enough...) the land is residential.

Mr Ker, it is not, and you know it, and locals do not want high density residential developments on the front doorstep of what is clearly, a country lane.

Cripes, we're not even on town water! No-one in the street is. And I don't fancy the run off from 56 ticky tacky units (and one manager's residence) polluting my drinking water!

The Kapiti Coast District Council began promisingly enough, by criticising the proposal for attempting to set a precedent of annexing productive arable rural land for dreadful subdivisions. But they seem to be backing down, implying tacit approval for the project should certtain information be supplied.

It should be turned down flat. The land will probably be needed for growing biofuel in a few years. Or food.

But anyway, as Peter Campbell said (neighbour & first person interviewed on checkpoint) in his submission, this proposal fails to meet any of the rules governing rural land use (and most rules governing residential land use), why are we wasting our time with it?

Mislaid the camera...

Which is by way of an apology for no photos to post.

We were within a few minutes of seeing the twister that came from Kapiti Island to Raumati, even crossing State Highway 1!! We wondered what was causing the hold up.

And man, if we'd seen it I'd have been mightily miffed that I've mislaid the camera.

In other news, we also missed the tragic mid air collison between a chopper & a light plane. It all happened on K Coast this weekend.

I spent the weekend mowing & digging. As is my lot it seems sometimes. The orchard got mowed & sprayed for weeds - that took half a day! Nuts are already beginning to drop from some of the trees, harvest isn't until July at the earliest.

I also dug up two olive trees that had been planted in a bad spot & replaced them with two weeping pears. Mrs Llew turned the ground underneath these trees from patchy lawn to lily beds, bordered with boxed hedge. (Less to mow :)

I've also been watching a large branch that started to fall from a very tall tree (sounded like machine gun fire) & now hangs over the sleepout & compost bins. One day soon I believe I will find about 2 years worth of firewood sitting on or near the compost. It's a bit high up to think about helping it along.

And I tested my new, improved orchard hook. It looks like a bought one. Except I don't believe anyone makes them to sell. Basically, it's a telescopic pole which extends from 2.5 to 5 metres. I got the telescoping pipes from Ulrich Aluminium, and drilled holes at intervals so that I can insert a pin to hold it in place. I drilled far too many holes at first until I decided it only needs to extend to 2 or three lengths, not dozens of lengths at several centimetres' intervals. So I wound duct tape around my extra holes & it looks like a purpose made handle!

I'd have taken a photo.

And the chestnut & apple trees, including those of the crab variety are groaning under the weight of fruit - I don't think I've ever seen such big chestnuts & they're nowhere near ripe yet. (And as I noted to Mrs Llew yesterday, the chestnut tree itself is a young 'un at 10 metres tall... we can expect it to at least triple in size as the years pass. (then I'll need a 30 metre telescoping orchard hook).

But most impressive of all was the small punnet of home grown strawberries we ate on Saturday. Best of the season. And... I snipped heaps of runners off them & planted them out (some had taken root all by themselves & I just snipped their lifelines). Lots & lots of new, free strawberry plants.

What's newsworthy about this?

Precious Porsche bent out of shape - Stuff.co.nz

How many similar accidents take place every day? Is it just because this is a porsche & we can have a chortle at the hapless "rich pricks" who might own & drive one?

OK, a couple of years ago some guy took a porsche for a spin & drove it over some rocks into the sea near Shelly Bay - that WAS amusing, because the driver wasn't the owner of the car & somehow, (don't ask me why) that made it funny.

But I dunno about this one, go see a porsche with a dent in the front wing, ha ha!! No, that doesn't really do it for me.

These were taken at the Annual Waikawa Beach Boat Day. It's a lovely (if somewhat god foresaken in parts) spot. Each year, since time began (at least my mid 30 something nephew remembers taking part in this more than 25 years ago), the residents of the sleepy little beach community at Waikawa gather at the river mouth & hold a series of races. Very serious some of them are too. Must have been a couple of thousand people there, a PA system set up for the race officials, a sausage sizzle, and hundreds of picnickers. It was good fun.

Natural selection

I was walking along the beach the other day, as you do, when ahead I noticed 5 adults, one with a toddler on his shoulders, watching a young boy performing donuts on a small quad bike.

"Retards", was my first uncharitable thought, only that morning I'd been reading an article in the DomPost about quad & motor bike accidents on the beach.

Next time I looked over at them, the adults were all running over the sand towards the toppled quad bike which was now on top of the young boy.

He was alright though, they picked him up, and the bike, stuck him back on & urged him, with some taunting because he wasn't keen anymore, to get back out there making donuts!

SunnyO: Spread the word, we've found Olive

RESULT!

Last October I reported that a neighbour's 7 year old black labrador was apparently stolen from outside his house.

Well early this week I saw him out walking her in the morning. Seems a few days before Christmas he got a phone call from the Lower Hutt dog control people to say they'd found a black lab matching Olive's description wandering the streets of Taita (Olive hails from Central Wellington).

It was her, about 10 kg heavier, but unmistakably her.

SunnyO: Spread the word, we're looking for Olive

Unfortunately, I'm told that there are notices up in shops for another black lab missing from the area.

Maybe they should take a drive around Taita this weekend.

Oops

I resisted the urge to send this little story to Sideswipe, complete with names... and I describe the sorry tale with names & places changed to protect the innocent & the stupid. And me, since I might get sprung on this.

Friends up North, are about to head to Europe for a few years' secondment. One of them is already there, his family are still in NZ making last minute preparations to join him soon.

The one in Europe, he has a company car here, which he was due to pass on to his successor at the beginning of this week.

In the weekend, his father offered to take the children, including a 15 year old with a learner's license to the beach.

After they'd left, the wife had a thought, and rang the father in law:

"Whatever you do, don't let the fifteen year old persuade you that she can drive tha car home. It will have been a long day & she'll be tired."

A short while later, she called him again, realising that her daughter was argumentative & persuasive, to reiterate the point.

Later, she did so again.

Late in the afternoon, she got a call from a relative to tell her that she had the kids, and the grandfather at her place & they had been in some sort of accident.

Yes.

15 year old learner driver, had persuaded her grandfather that she was competent to drive her dad's company car home.

Somewhere on the Auckland motorway, she changed lanes, without looking.

You can fill in the rest. No one hurt fortunately, aside from a few bruised egos & two mangled cars. At least one outraged mother's temper lost in the aftermath.

I confess I have been told off for finding this hugely amusing.

Armoured Bears

Since I read & loved the Hotel New Hampshire, I've often said that everyone needs a bear... I guess if underneath the hair & stuff they looked like Nastassja Kinski, it'd be a bonus.

The movie version of Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights (filmed as The Golden Compass) is getting mixed reviews. But I'm keen to see how Iorek Byrneson is portrayed.

Because really, if you have to travel a dangerous wilderness, what better and safer company than a talking, armoured polar bear.

Rock on.

Phew, seal breath.

Update: "If I were you... I'd hire myself an aeronaut & an armoured bear."

Ancestry

My mum sent me some old photos of her family, that someone sent on to her. Remember I mentioned my mum's grandparents a while back? They lived up the mountain & they'd take the donkey a few hours up into the hills & get water from a spring?

Well here they all are:

Great Grandparents

These are my great grandparents on my mum's side, they're her mother's parents.

With the family

And this is them with their family - I believe I would have known some of these when they were very old. In fact, I think I visited the youngest sister when I was last in Wales, she was a spry ninety something. One of the reasons they lived up out of the polluted valley, was because she had TB as a child.

The hottie 4th from the left at the back is my grandmother :)

A little older...

Now we're getting obscure - this might be the kids from above a little older - I daresay an email will swing my way soon with loads more details.... My grandmother is not in this photo however.

Levi & Friend

This is Great grandfather Levi on the left.

Levi & Jinny

And here he is with his faithful donkey, Jinny, whose bones were unearthed on the mountainside not that long ago. Some animals, especially I guess, beasts of burden, live hard lives. I bet though, with that many kids at hand it had some good times too.

Rainy Day

Visitors from the USA & Hawkes Bay, respectively

In an effort to make this visitor from the Hawkes Bay's day, someone clever photoshopped him into this picture of American actor Giovanni Ribisi kicking back at the Mighty Mighty last week. Damian was only recently saying that there should be more celebs in Wellington.

Meanwhile, off topic completely, this year's nut harvest at SunnyO is all over. Bar the drying. We stripped 6 trees (and have a slight suspicion there should have been another one ready to go somewhere), and harvested less than 20kg! This is a lot less than I expected, but they are biennial & this is the light year. That makes around 70 kg for the year.

I expect 5 times that next year.

And we rejoiced! For yesterday afternoon it rained for the first time in ages! And it rained all night! Our massive rainwater tank was half empty & I was slightly worried. Within two hours of rain falling theough, the tank was full again, as was every plastic bin & bucket I could lay my hands on.

It's gonna be a long hot & dry one folks. But we're ready.

I should have known it was going to rain, because I organised it by spending the day prior installing a simple irrigation hose in the berry house - of course it always rains when irrigation gets installed. At least we have the water to run through it.

In beast news... there was a rat in our barbecue when I uncovered it. Not on the cooking surfaces, down in the guts of the thing. And later, while I was watching buckets fill with rain, a rat darted past me & up one of the phoenix palms. Just where is our large predator when we need her?

I seeded the place with rat bait. That'll learn him.

Reconsidering getting a big air gun too.

Oh - and here's the real photo with Hadyn.

I spent a lot of the weekend mowing lawns

Well... some of it anyway. Spent Saturday night drinking, eating & making merry with friends. We were supposed to be greeting the 15 year old at around 7pm when she was to be dropped off from her Wanganui rowing regatta earlier in the day. We got a text at 6.30 saying they were just leaving...

No-one was keen to stay sober to go pick her up from the drop off point, so at around 10pm, 6 middle aged drunks & a labrador staggered 600 metres down the road & around the corner.

Mission accomplished.

For the next two days I struggled to get the mower to start twice in a row without having to recharge the battery. I got the lawns done, and the orchard, in the end.

While doing the orchard, something interesting happened. A large rat sauntered through the grass. I charged it, it moved away (the mower isn't very fast). I screamed at it! And wondered where my faithful hunting hound was.

Then the hound turned up - Mrs Llew had heard me scream & came over in case I'd just mowed my leg off or something. The brave dog knew a rat had been there, but she ignored Mrs Llew's shouts to "Look this way" at the calmly retreating rat carrying a big macadamia nut.

Finally, when the rodent was nearly through the fence into a neighbouring paddock, Wilma spotted it. Man she moved fast. But too late. Too late.

I might get have to get a gun after all. I can ride shotgun on the mower.

How do I delete my Facebook entry? I pretty much turned off all notifications, the snowball was the last straw - not that it was a problem or anything, I suddenly wondered "Why?"

So I turned all notifications off, severely limited what would appear on my page, then I came across "deactivate".

However, anyone know how to delete me from it completely? It says my account is deactivated, but will reactivate if I ever log in again. Hmm.

Complete. Waste. Of. Time.

And I should know, I'm gifted in this respect.
